JCPenney Is Going to Start Selling Some Items for Only a Penny

Malls across America are going to have to set up security guards at every fountain. That's because the pennies people toss in to make a wish might be worth lots of brand-new clothes. JCPenney is launching a series of sales where you can buy items for just one penny.

The company announced the "Get Your Penney's Worth" sale strategy on Thursday, and said they would start advertising it this spring. The plan includes "Penney Days," which makes select products from the company's store brands sell for just one penny. The first Penney Days event will start on February 28 in stores and online. You can buy one regular priced Arizona clothing item or accessory and get another one for a penny.

And future Penney Days will offer one-cent items that you can buy without purchasing another item first, while supplies last. The company is keeping mum about what other products will be on sale for one red cent, but execs told Today.com they will be "five-star-rated" items from store-exclusive brands.

According to Fortune, the company is starting an ambitious turnaround plan that focuses on its in-house brands like Liz Claiborne and St. John's Bay. JCPenney executives say the sale is a strategy to show customers that their store features great deals. "We know our customers live very busy lives and we want every trip and interaction at JCPenney to be worth her time, her hard earned money and her effort," Mary Beth West, chief customer and marketing officer, said in a press release. "If JCPenney can help her discover the things she loves more easily, innovatively and consistently than anyone else, we know she'll come back for more."

JCPenney, then, hopes that you show up for a one-penny deal and stock up on other items while you're there — then become a loyal customer for the long run. The company gets a snazzy marketing campaign, and you might get a pair of jeans for one cent. Not a bad trade-off.
