Do You Live in a Cat State Or a Dog State?

Image
Getty There are two types of people in this world: Those who love cats and those who love dogs. You know which side of the fence you sit on, but one question lingers — what about your neighbors? Thankfully, Realtor.com (using data from the American Veterinary Medical Association) has officially investigated. So which pet rules in each state? The results are surprisingly divided. All of the "dog states" are clustered together in the South while cats dominate almost all of the Northeast. Not all states are so polarized, though, with 22 states earning a mixed ranking, signifying that the cat and dog populations differed by less than 20 percent. Regardless of preference, Realtor.com reports that Americans are spending more money on their pets now than 15 years ago, and that people are house-hunting in all 50 states with pet amenities in mind. So maybe the question isn't whether we prefer cats or dogs ... but whether we actually like them better than the human members of

After Hearing a Mysterious "Hissing" Noise in Her Dryer, Woman Finds Missing King Cobra

Elvis may have left the building, but now he has been returned — and is hopefully in a very secure cage. Florida authorities recently captured a missing 8-foot king cobra named Elvis, after a woman heard hissing noises every time she put clothes in her dryer, CNN reports. The Orlando area resident immediately contacted local officers, who discovered and wrangled the venomous snake. Elvis originally escaped after a tree fell on his enclosure during a September storm. Ever since, search teams have been frantically looking for the snake while the terrified community took precautions such as keeping schoolchildren inside at recess. One bite from a king cobra can kill an elephant. An elephant! Mike Kennedy, the snake's owner, lives just 1,500 feet from where Elvis was found. He pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to report the missing snake immediately. And after ensuring the enclosure is now safe, authorities returned Elvis to Kennedy. "It's horrible that this has ha

Give Your House That New Cat Smell With This Spray

Image
Getty This week in "really?" news, Japanese company Felissimo has introduced a fabric spray that makes your home smell like a cat. It isn't just any part of the cat though — it smells like the head of a cat. Which, according to the company, is the best smelling part of a feline. Bored Panda even reports that many Japanese cat lovers report that it smells like "everything from the smell of sunshine to the sweet scent of just baked bread." Sure, that sounds right. To recreate the cat-tastic fragrance, Felissimo enlisted the head of Yamamoto Perfumery, Mr. Yamamoto, to spend four months interacting with a variety of cats to familiarize himself with their specific scent. After their extensive research, the company was able to produce the fabric spray, which gives cat people the chance to make their home, or even their clothes, smell like the head of a cat. And because the spray only costs $$, it's a lot cheaper than actually owning a feline friend. (But, y

Why It's Impossible to Make Your Bed If You Have a Cat

Image
Getty Raúl Barrero Photography Making your bed isn't that difficult — unless you have a cat. Like a treasured knickknack, any houseplants, and pretty much anything in the house, a person trying to tuck in a sheet is catnip to many felines. And Youtube supercats Cole and Marmalade and their human "servant" Chris Poole perfectly capture that daily struggle in this funny new video. Because, really, it's impossible to smooth out a topsheet when there's a kitten rolling around underneath. Can You See the 500 Sheep Hiding in This Photo?

Image
On Tuesday morning, Canadian farmer Liezel Kennedy ventured out on her farm to check on her flock of more than 500 sheep. But when she arrived at the field where they were supposed to be grazing, she was startled to see that they had seemingly disappeared overnight. Courtesy of Liezel Kennedy "I drove right by them the first time," she tweeted. Honestly, we can't say we would have been able to spot them at first glance either. Here's another shot that Liezel took: Courtesy of Liezel Kennedy Still can't see them? We don't blame you. Take one more closer look; this photo was taken from about 50 feet away. Courtesy of Liezel Kennedy Courtesy of Liezel Kennedy There they are! Liezel told a Buzzfeed reporter that she has the same problem in the warmer months, too: Courtesy of Liezel Kennedy It's like Mother Nature's coolest optical illusion! Still, we're glad Liezel eventually spotted her well-camouflaged flock. (h/t Buzzfeed) From: Country Living

These Truffle-Hunting Puppies Will Melt Your Heart Into a Puddle

Blackberry Farm, the Relais & Châteaux getaway in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, has been called the "country's ultimate resort." In addition to the dynamite culinary offerings and spa, which get maximum exposure, the resort has a kennel where it raises Lagotto Romagnolo dogs, a special, rare breed that dates back 600 years to Piedmont in Italy, the greatest truffle-bearing region on the planet. The dogs have become known for their truffle-hunting abilities, and the resort uses them to hunt truffles at a nearby orchard. Look at that face. BLACKBERRY FARM And in 2008, Blackberry Farm responded to demand and started a breeding program that sells dogs exclusively to its guests (there's a two-year waiting list ). There are three litters every year, and three weeks ago one of the six females in the breeding program gave birth to five puppies. They took their first steps on grass earlier today. "Pretty much every guest on the property will come down to the

See 100 Years of Adorable Children's Toys in Under 3 Minutes

What's not to love about this look back at 100 years of popular children's toys? Starting in 1910, this video from Mode comes just in time for the holidays. Some highlights include robots, which were a pretty cool toy in the 1950s. And '80s kids will be happy to see their favorite Care Bear make an appearance (although, in our book, no discussion of '80s toys would be complete without Strawberry Shortcake). As for the highlighted toy of 2015, it's (surprise!) the "hoverboard" that everyone has gone crazy for this year. So, will you be getting one or is Changeable Charlie starting to look pretty sweet?
