7 Reasons We Simply Can't Wait for Fall

Image
Getty We're soaking up the last month of true summer sun, and we're not complaining. Still, we can't fall is just around the corner, and the romance of it all has got us a little distracted from our beach days..  Don't get us wrong, flowy dresses, rattan furniture, and summery colors are wonderful. But there's something magical about autumn. Here's why: 1. It's time to unpack all your cozy throws and quilts. Each one holds a special place in your heart, and in your home. And as all of us perpetually cold people know, there's nothing quite as satisfying as cuddling up underneath a soft cashmere blanket. Getty 2. We get excited about moody, deep colors again. Summer is all about the bright hues. So, when fall finally rolls around, the soothing, warm oranges, browns, and reds that come with it can be quite comforting. Paul Raeside 3. Layering comes back in a big way. Whether its blankets on quilts on comforters in your bedroom, or sca...

Reach a Zen State in This Beachside Cottage Bathroom

Image
Trevor Tondro The beach is right outside this house in Marina del Rey, California, but you'd never have known it from the dark and cramped master bath. Designer Daleet Spector reconfigured the space and added large windows to let in more light. "The clients don't like a lot of color, so we worked with different textures instead," she says. Plain shiplap on the walls, painted pure white, reinforces the casual cottage theme. And there's something almost Japanese about the vanities, which manage to be rustic and sophisticated at the same time. They're made of cast concrete, in two smooth blocks that seem to float over the oak cabinets. "Concrete can be a very sensuous material, almost soft to the touch," Spector says. "And the surface has a beautiful irregularity that feels organic."  Trevor Tondro Wall-mounted faucets free up space on the countertops and leave the lines uninterrupted. "The forms are very simple, and that helps make th...

An Ode to the Color Pink

Image
Pink has an undeserved reputation of being saccharine, weak, or childish. We profoundly disagree. Though it brings to mind bubblegum and tutus, the color also has an agreeable sophistication — and a place in every room. Whether you go for complex coral shades or haughty hot hues, pink is your friend. Here are just a few reasons why we're always thinking pink: 1. Warm, sunset-y tones transport us to a balmy beach getaway. A glimpse of coral brings to mind the technicolor stucco walls you see in tropical destinations. Bjorn Wallander 2. It reminds us of the excitement and optimism of spring. A pristine pink rose in bloom is one of nature's exquisite beauties. Margrethe Myhrer 3. Pink always makes a stylish first impression. Even in a room filled with gorgeous furniture, it's the first thing your eye catches. Victoria Pearson 4. It's a passionate color. Every day is Valentine's Day with a touch of pink. 5. A shade with cooler undertones can be oh-so-soothing. Though ...

Courtesy of Sugar Pie Farmhouse The tastiest spot in the house has everything a baker could ever dream of: pie pans, rolling pins, measuring cups, spoons, and baking spices. The...

7 Designer Tips for Styling a Killer Bookshelf

Image
"Despite the rise of digital media, it's a rare client who doesn't want bookshelves. Books have a unique way of keeping us company! I love the way they personalize a room. A whole case of them — especially interspersed with photos and other objects — says so much about who you are and where you've been. Just make sure your shelves aren't busy; if there are too many items in the mix, it looks cluttered and confused. You want your bookcases to represent you." — Interior designer   DD Allen   Fernando Bengoechea Underscore the architecture. "I designed a whole wall of built-ins to highlight the quirky charm of this attic study [ above ]. The books cozy up the room but also function as a dominant element. They give the wall purpose." Bring the spines forward. "Spines should always be flush with the edge of the shelf. Trust me, it just looks better!"  Go glam. "In this jewel box of a library [ below ], we lined the backs of booksh...
