This Open-Air Church Is an Otherworldly Place to Host a Wedding

Today I was made the luckiest man in the world. A post shared by Jason Mraz (@jason_mraz) on Oct 25, 2015 at 7:38pm PDT On October 25, musician Jason Mraz married his longtime girlfriend, Christina Carano, in a small ceremony at The Polegreen Church in Mechanicsville , Virginia. As you can see from the photo that he shared on social media, this is no ordinary church. Built in the 1700s, the space is famous for being one of the first Presbyterian churches built in Virginia. It was burned down during a battle in the Civil War and was never totally rebuilt. Now, it stands as a beautiful but surreal structure, with windows and beams that seem to be magically suspended in the air, and its ceiling merely the trees and the sky. Mraz shared a photo of his lovely bride standing within the church, ensconced in vivid fall foliage, with the caption, "Today I was made the luckiest man in the world." Check out a few more photos of the church below. And um, next time someone plans a w

Try This Genius Trick to Help You Pick a Paint Color

Image
There's a lot of careful consideration that goes into choosing the right paint color for a space. Sometimes, uncertainty means you end up taking a risk — and the end result isn't always what you wanted. Next time, save yourself the headache of repainting by giving this trick (which we first spotted on A Beautiful Mess) a try: First, take a picture of the space in question. Then, upload the image to Photoshop or another photo editor and sub in the different background colors you're considering. Then, place the images side-by-side to help you determine which looks best. Yes, it does require some Photoshop 101 skills (watching this YouTube tutorial for a quick lesson), but once you've got the basics down, it's a handy party trick to have in your back pocket. The doctored photos offer a much more realistic idea of what your room will look like than several paint chips taped to the wall. If Photoshop is a little too far out of your realm, try a decorating app for ext

These everyday moves can help you waste less and save more. Courtesy of Nest Program Your Home's Temperature At this point, every home should have a programmable thermostat (call up your utility provider — they might even give you one at no cost, like Direct Energy) . Use one to lower the temperature every day 7 to 10 degrees when you're not home or at night when you sleep, and you can save up to $$$ per year. For a truly techy option, try the Nest Learning Thermostat — it learns your habits to automatically adjust the temperature when you're not around. So save by running loads of laundry and dishes after dinner instead or in the early morning. Daniel Grill/Getty Images Wash on the Cold Cycle Speaking of laundry, your washing machine devotes 90% of its energy to heating up the water — and cold water will get clothes just as clean. W

10 Things You Didn't Know About Kensington Palace

Image
Getty 1. Kensington Palace has been a royal home for over 300 years. William III and Mary II were the first royal residents. Queen Anne, George I and George II and Queen Caroline made Kensington Palace their home, too. Queen Victoria secured apartments at Kensington Palace for her daughters, Princess Louise and Princess Beatrice. Princess Margaret had apartments from the 1960s and now it is home to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their family, as well as Prince Harry. 2. The Queen's staircase is deliberately plainer than the King's. While the King's staircase is a grand affair with walls painted by William Kent, the Queen's staircase is much more plain Jane. Why? This makes it feel much more domestic. Queen Mary would also use the staircase to easily reach her beloved gardens through the door at its foot. Vienna Is the Definition of Magic During Christmas

Image
Getty If we didn't know any better, we'd say Christmas was created in Vienna, Austria — every holiday season it really turns on the sparkle. The capital is known for its festive trademarks (in fact, the snow globe was first patented there), live nativity scenes, moving holiday art performances, markets and decorations. Getty The Graben Vienna — a massive shopping street in the center of the capital — is enjoyed by tourists and locals alike, thanks to the countless stores. But since the 1970s — when it was first designated as a pedestrian zone — it's been admired for the amazing views of buildings surrounding it, like the palace Equitable, as well as the Grabenhof. And not surprisingly, everything only looks better illuminated by the stunning lights and giant chandeliers. Getty The Rathausplatz is transformed into a giant ice skating rink, and is lit up by multi-colored lights once night fall hits. Multiple trails are offered, based on your skill level. This Is What a $100,000 Chicken Coop Looks Like

Image
Neiman Marcus For the one-percenter who wants her feathered friends to live as elegantly as she does, Neiman Marcus offers the Heritage Hen Mini Farm. Price tag: $$$,000.  The coop was inspired by (what else?) Versailles, taking its design cues from the Louis XV-era Petit Trianon chateau. In addition to cushy rooms for nesting and roosting, the multi-level dwelling comes with a chandelier and a small library stocked with books on gardening and raising chickens — you know, in case you want to read up on those subjects while tending to the hens.  "There's a growing trend with backyard chicken keeping, and certainly you don't need to have farming in your background or even know how to farm in order to appreciate this gift," said Svetlana Simon, cofounder (with husband Marty) of the company behind the luxury coop.  Neiman Marcus Neiman Marcus Neiman Marcus The hen house is basically a fancy starter kit for keeping chickens: It includes three to ten heritage-breed hen

14 Things You Never Knew About Kate Middleton

Image
Getty You may think you know everything about the Duchess of Cambridge. After all, not a day goes by without a new tidbit from her life making the news (and, yes, we're totally guilty). But there is a lot more to the the future queen beyond her fairytale romance, adorable family and plethora of fun hats! 1. Kate proved she'd be a natural at the royal life at an early age. In 1992, when she was just 10 years old, the future princess played a lovesick Prince Charming in her school's production of Cinderella . Some of her hilarious lines included, "I'm in love. I can't eat. I can't sleep. I can't concentrate on anything." 2. She's an art buff. She studied the History of Art at University of St. Andrews and also spent a year studying art in Florence, Italy. 3. And she loves taking photos, too. Before she got married, she used to take pictures for her parents' mail-order company Party Pieces. More recently, she's credited with snapping a

6 Things You Need to Know Before You Make Soup

Image
Ethan Calabrese We're big fans of soup in any form and in any season. Fall, winter, cheesy, healthy, if it's in a bowl, we're eating it. But in all our soup-making and consuming, we've learned a few key things that any soup master should know. Consider this your roadmap to better soup stat:  1. Salt at every stage.  Soup-making is kind of like building a tower. In a tower, every level affects the one above it — if one layer isn't strong, the tower falls down. It's the same principle with soup: if one step doesn't taste good, nothing you add on top of it will taste good, either. So whether you're starting with sautéed onions, or adding ground meat, or pouring over a basic stock, you need to give each its own shot of salt and pepper. It seems like overkill, but well-seasoned layers are what create depth of flavor.  2. Consider your stock options. We tend to think of chicken broth as the catch-all liquid. But it's worth considering some others. Beef

The Top 20 Cities That Americans Are Leaving En Masse

Image
For steadfast urbanites, cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington D.C. will always and forever be a place to call home. That is, as long as the cost of living there doesn't rise too high. Apparently it is, according to Bloomberg Business's new list of the top 20 cities tons of Americans are leaving. While the aforementioned hubs didn't claim the top spot – that honor belongs to El Paso, Texas (pictured above) – they do make appearances on the list..  Several rust belt cities are also included, which Bloomberg reports suffered sharp population drops due to a lack of jobs. These cities include Detroit as well as three cities in nearby Ohio: Dayton, Cleveland and Toledo, where the manufacturing jobs that were once readily available are now scarce.  Take a look at the graphic below for the full list.
