Ashton Kutcher Surprises Mom With a Complete Home Makeover

Image
Courtesy of Daily Mail This year, Ashton Kutcher didn't take the typical route to picking out a Mother's Day gift. Instead of a beautiful bouquet or spa day, the 37-year-old actor decided to surprise his mom by completely redesigning her Iowa house. Kutcher, who recently had a baby with wife and actress, Mila Kunis, had a vision to transform his childhood home into a more grandkid-friendly space. And the makeover was also his way of thanking his mom for all she's done for him. "My mom has been the greatest influence in my life – my parents gave me everything. They went to great sacrifices to give me the life that I have and anything I can do to say thank you is the right thing," said Kutcher. Though he lives in Los Angeles, the actor was able to redesign the home through the website, Houzz. But it wasn't hard for Kutcher to make decisions remotely: He helped his step-father build the house when he was 13, so he knew the layout inside and out. The 27-day ...

Lance Bass's Kitchen Is a Home Cook's Dream

Image
You probably know Lance Bass from his days in *NSYNC or from his gig as a  Meredith Vieira Show contributor, but what most people don't know is the man loves to cook. He and his husband, artist/actor Michael Turchin, recently renovated their Los Angeles kitchen — modeling it after cooking show sets — so they can get their Iron Chef on anytime.  HomeGoods / Harry Van Gorkum The Kitchen Is TV-Ready "One of my favorite things to do is cook with my husband, Michael," Bass says. "We love watching chef shows — anything with Chef [Gordon] Ramsay — and we thought, 'why not make it look like we could shoot a show here?'" Bass is actually working on developing a show now. "It willed itself to happen," he says. HomeGoods / Harry Van Gorkum Even The Stove Impresses Bass took choosing a range very seriously, and shopped around with one demand: "It had to be gas," he says. "I had to have a good burner. I cook half my fo...

The Story Behind Every Home George Clooney Has Owned

Not sure if you've heard this, but actor George Clooney is no slouch. Hollywood royalty, Clooney always has a beautiful (and these days, incredibly smart) woman on his arm, scores impressive film and TV roles, and is quite the philanthropist to boot. So of course, as his career and personal life took off, he picked up some stellar real estate along the way, too. HGTV offers a look back at the many homes George has owned — and how much they cost. As an up-and-coming actor (if you can even imagine Clooney before he was mega famous), he bunked with his famous aunt Rosemary Clooney, but these days he's living large. Watch the video for the full scoop. TELL US: Which of George's homes is your fave? 11 Homes That Shaped History's Most Famous Authors

Re-reading your favorite book is like wrapping yourself in a blanket: warm, comforting, and oh-so enjoyable. The fictional homes in our favorite books — like Longbourn from Pride and Prejudice or Tara from Gone With the Wind — are oftentimes a big enough presence to nearly feel like separate characters. But what about the homes that shaped the lives of the authors themselves? Instagram recently curated a collection of users' photos of famous authors' homes, and we couldn't help but share a few of our favorites. The photos are a fascinating peek inside the personal lives of some of history's most cherished literati. Take a Peek at Katharine Hepburn's Former Love Nest

Image
Getty + The Agency Real Estate Before Katharine Hepburn was known for her roles in "The Philadelphia Story" and "Bringing Up Baby," she was an up-and-coming actress renting a beautiful five-bedroom, Mexican-style home in Los Angeles. Today, that home is on the market for a cool $.3 million, but it's pricey status hardly tells the place's full story. The 4,984 square foot home was owned by horror actor Boris Karloff in the '30s and '40s, and it is allegedly where Hepburn carried out an illicit affair with her agent Leland Hayward, according to Today . With its lush gardens, white-washed masonry walls and exposed wood beams, it certainly does have a rustic, romantic feel that begs you to get cozy. And we're not sure if the homes had the statuesque outdoor fireplace when Hepburn lived there, but we're sure the next homeowner will enjoy cuddling up with someone special in front of it. Talk a walk around the rest of the home (don't miss t...

12 Neat Things You Didn't Know About Bob Ross

Image
Getty Acey Harper Here's your inarguable fact of the day: Bob Ross was and is a national treasure. He spent 11 years spreading the "Joy of Painting" to PBS viewers mesmerized by the flicks of his wrist on canvas (and, well, people who just wanted to take a nap, see below), and remains an Internet sensation today. But there was much more to the man than his soothing, soft-spoken voice and cheery landscapes. 1. He discovered his penchant for painting while serving in the Air Force. In ninth grade, Ross dropped out of high school, and at 18 he enlisted in the Air Force. Based in Alaska, he took his first painting class in Anchorage, and was "hooked" immediately — but it would be awhile before art became his full-time gig. It was 20 years before he left service. He said "the job requires you to be a mean, tough, person. And I was fed up with it." Talk about a total 180 — after his military days, Ross essentially made a career out of never being mean or ...
