Next Wave: Meet Designer Robin Henry

Former Brooklynite Robin Henry now calls Connecticut home. Her lively, elegant rooms mix contemporary and traditional touches and fit in effortlessly just about anywhere.

Below, a glimpse at one of Henry's projects. This living room in a prewar Manhattan apartment had good bones but was dark. To accomodate her clients, Robin Henry also need to make the space as multifunctional as possible. She chose neutral hues for the walls and curtains, then brightened everything up with a sofa in an electric blue Designtex mohair and an embroidered rug by Fedora Design. A Robsjohn-Gibbings card table and Ward Bennett chair provide a work station and a dose of modernity.

The upholstered armchair swivels for ease of conversation between the room's different zones, and a settee in Norbar Fabrics linen, finished with a central Quadrille patterned panel, is an extra place to chat. "The differences in scale, pattern, and texture are what make a room come alive," the designer says.

Making Wallpaper in the '60s Was More Complicated Than You Think

Wallpaper  in the 1960s was what  pastel kitchens  were in the 1950s — ubiquitous. And according to this archival footage of a wallpaper factory in England, new technology was a major reason why. The video takes us behind the scenes of the "science fiction-ish procedure" used to craft these decidedly over-the-top — at least by today's standards — wall decor. As the narrator points out, some hand-blocking was still used during those "machine mad days," but modern inventions were heavily relied upon in order to crank out thousands of sheets a day.
