9 Fresh Ideas for a Fun Vertical Garden

Proof that your plants don't need to be stuck in the ground.

Shelterness
Spruce Up a Fence
Add extra color to your backyard by attaching flower pot hangers to a boring fence and hanging spray-painted terracotta planters from them, like Mike from Shelterness did in his outdoor spot.

Recycle a Wooden Pallet
Grace of A Storied Style repurposed a wooden pallet that had been delivered with her new dining set. After lightly sanding and applying mineral oil to the pallet, she attached Weed Stop fabric to hold the plants.

Fill a Window
For a vintage-inspired look, take an old window frame and fill it with lush foliage, like Randy Raburn did with this vertical garden. Best news? You can use it to hide eyesores in your garden or walls.

Install Shelves
A vertical garden doesn't have to be outside — and this project works for both indoors and outdoors. Mandi of Vintage Revivals was inspired by shelves found at Anthropologie and created her own with copper sheeting and wooden boards. A variety of vessels and plants line the shelves to create a chic, overgrown look.

Repurpose a Frame
Renee of Re: Creative painted an old frame, installed a piece of mesh to the opening, and attached a piece of plywood with drainage holes to the back of the frame. She then added soil and succulents, but the trick is letting the plants grow flat for four weeks before hanging.

Try Magnets
This idea is a sweet and simple way to add some blooms to your house. Amy of Delineate Your Dwelling decorated empty spice containers with paint and washi tape and planted daffodil bulbs in them. By hot-gluing magnets to the back she can easily hang them on any magnetic surface.

Up-cycle Your Trash
These planters aren't ceramic or clay; they're spray-painted plastic bottles! After cleaning, cutting, and painting the containers, Lucy of eHow used twine to hang them together.
