4 All-Natural Air Fresheners to DIY This Fall

As summer transitions into fall, you may find yourself wondering what to do with some of the excess produce from your garden. Fortunately, there are many ways to put that fruit to good use, and one of my favorite DIY projects is making all-natural air fresheners. You can even turn your garden goodies into great hostess gifts while you're at it.

SCENTED MASON JARS

Begin by deciding on your scents. I chose two distinct profiles: Spicy and sweet. Depending on what I'm in the mood for, I've always got something suitable on hand.

For each of the following recipes, combine all ingredients in a large Mason jar and fill to the top with water.

Cinnamon Citrus Spice

  • 1-2 oranges, cut into slices or wedges
  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • Several drops of peppermint extract
Honey Lavender Lemon

  • 2-3 lemons, cut into slices or wedges
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 ounce lavender essential oil
For the stovetop method of scent diffusion, place the jar into a pot of water and simmer on the stove at a low temperature. Be sure to check the pot and the jar often and refill with water as needed.

If you'd like to disperse the all-natural goodness throughout the house, once the jar begins steaming, carefully remove it from the pot and place it on a windowsill. Reheat and refill with water as necessary.

PUMPKIN SOUFFLE & LAVENDER SUGAR SCENTED CANDLES

There's no requirement that you actually grow the items you're using in your DIY gift basket. For example, I made these all natural DIY soy candles using vegetable dye blocks and essential oils inspired by items you could grow in your own backyard if you were so inclined.

I colored these candles using an orange vegetable dye block and laced them with the fragrance of Pumpkin Soufflé. One light of the wick and you'd almost swear you were baking a pumpkin soufflé in the oven!

To achieve the color differentiation when pouring these candles, allow each layer to fully cool before pouring the next. All three layers of this candle have the delicious scent of lavender with a hint of vanilla.

For packaging these gifts, I wrapped each jar with a matching ribbon and hand-wrote descriptions of the contents on my favorite color-coordinated stationery by Tiny Prints.
