A Hamptons Escape With a Playful European Elegance

Designer Steven Gambrel paired grandiose appointments with unexpected colors (like cantaloupe!).

Entry Hall
Accompanying the client's own Louis XVI chairs in the entry hall is an antique English console, one of a pair. On its top, an exceptionally large pottery lamp from Red Modern Furniture is both impressive and handsome. The walls are painted in Benjamin Moore's Coventry Gray, and the limestone floor tile is courtesy of Exquisite Surfaces.

Breakfast Area
In the breakfast area, a generous banquette sits against the windows, covered in Brentano's Passerella. Saint Lazare chairs by TK Collections surround a custom-made oak table. Roman shades are in a Création Baumann fabric, and the window trim is in Pratt & Lambert's Rose Ash.

Kitchen
Traditional yet playful, the kitchen features 1920s French brass pendants from Blend Interiors, Carrara marble counters, rattan stools by TK Collections, and a Wolf range. The sink fittings are by Hans grohe. The cabinets are painted in White, with trim in Balboa Mist and wood floors in Silver Satin, all by Benjamin Moore.

Fireplace
A massive limestone mantel on the loggia surrounds a fireplace large enough to warm autumn's chilly nights. Sectional sofas are painted robin's-egg blue. The sofas, along with the coffee table between, are by Teklassic. The hanging lantern and sconces are from Ann-Morris, Inc.

Library
Warm, rich hues envelop the library. Custom sofa upholstered in Rogers & Goffigon's Shaker. Roman shades and pillows in Peter Dunham Textiles' Globe.

Dining Room
A pedestal table from Ma(i)sonry is the centerpiece in the oak-paneled dining room. It's surrounded by Ralph Lauren Home's Hither Hills armchairs upholstered in Schumacher's Ziggurat. The garrison sconces are by the Urban Electric Co. The curtains are in de Le Cuona's Chad Stripe. The fireplace is designed by Jamb and there is a custom rug that anchors the space.

Sitting Area
Robert Lighton's Athena side chair is covered in a rich red leather from Dune, with the back upholstered to match the dining room armchairs.

Living Room
In the spacious living room, the paired sofas aren't a pair — the one tucked in a niche is covered in a Hinson chenille, the other in a Jane Churchill fabric. The vintage coffee tables were given brand new tops in Gascogne Blue stone and are offset, which "works so much better than a single table when your sofas are perpendicular," Gambrel says. Custom club chairs are in a Pindler fabric and the ottoman is in a Keleen leather. Curtains and Roman shades are both in Arabel Fabrics' Slubby linen with trim in Rogers & Goffigon's Shaker. The windows and doors are painted in Pratt & Lambert's Lava.

Master Bedroom
In the master bedroom, the clients' own club chairs wear new upholstery in a Dedar fabric. The little drop-front desk is actually a 1940s reproduction of a popular 19th-century style, but a "hit of something antique always softens a room," says Gambrel. The "inky blue" curtain fabric is Schumacher's Abaza Resist. The walls are covered in Élitis's Peyrolles. The door and windows are painted in Pratt & Lambert's Gunnel, with a custom rug.
