This 104-Year-Old Great-Grandmother Yarn-Bombed Her Town
Grace Brett, who is thought to be the world's oldest street artist, is inspiring us to take up knitting. While the 104-year-old great grandma has been knitting and crocheting her whole life, she recently took her hobby to the next level: She yarn-bombed her town, covering everything from benches to telephone booths in imaginative designs.
Brett is the oldest member of Souter Stormers, a secretive group of "yarnstormers" who yarn-bombed 46 landmarks across Scotland's Borders County, according to Mental Floss. While Brett has six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, this certainly doesn't sound like your average grandmother's knitting club!
The Souter Stormers spent over a year planning the street instillation, which was part of the Yarrow, Ettrick and Selkirk "Yes" Arts Festival. "Having been to see the installations this morning, the response has been tremendous, creating grins and gasps all round, and bringing the community of Selkirk together in their surprise and admiration for the works," wrote the owner of a local textiles shop on Facebook.
Brett may not think of herself as a street artist, but she's happy to see people taking interest in her whimsical, hand-knit designs. "I liked seeing my work showing with everyone else and thought the town looked lovely," Brett told the Daily Record.
